In a blink of the eyes, the Hanoi, Vietnam 31st Southeast Asian Games Wushu Competitions have come to an end.
I am delighted to report that our Wushu athletes had done Singapore proud by winning a total of 6 medals – two Golds, three Silvers and one Bronze and surpassed the achievements of previous away SEA Games competitions.
One the first day of Wushu competitions, our Wushu athletes achieved one Silver & one Bronze. Jowen Lim Si Wei scored 9.70 in the Men’s Changquan but missed a Gold medal by 0.001 point and settled for a Silver medal. Chan Jun Kai scored 9.57 and won a Bronze medal in the Men’s Taijiquan.
On the second day, our Wushu Team won its first Gold medal in 31st SEA Games when Chan Jun Kai scored 9.72 and won a Gold medal for Singapore in the Men’s Taijijian. Then, our women Wushu athletes, Ong Li Ling Kimberly and Zoe Tan Ziyi who scored 9.69 & 9.66, respectively in the Gun Shu of Women’s Dao Shu & Gun Shu Combine event the day before and were ranked 3rd & 4th, clinched the top spots after scoring 9.68 & 9.67 respectively and won a Gold and a Silver for Team Singapore (Wushu).
On the third and final day, Jowen Lim Si Wei scored 9.69 in the Gun Shu of Men’s Dao Shu & Gun Shu Combine. With his same score in Dao Shu the day before, the combined total of 19.38 won him and Singapore a Silver medal.
The Team of eight has returned the best away results of two Golds, three Silvers and one Bronze. Other non-medallists have also performed well with two female Taiji athletes – Vera Tan Yan Ning and Zeanne Law Zhi Ning missing podium finish. Our young athletes Isabel Chua Xin Ting and Lim Yi Jie Randall have also made improvement and displayed confidence over the three days.
The Team Singapore (Wushu) thanks President Mr Ang Mong Seng BBM, Secretary General Mr Ng Kim Nguan and CEO Mr Leow Meng Hong, our Judges, coaches and parents of athletes for their full support.
We also thank Mr Tan Chuan Jin, Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of Singapore National Olympic Council; and Mr Eric Chua, Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Community and the Youth for their presence at the competition site to lend support to our athletes.
Last but not least, the Team Singapore (Wushu) would like to thank all fellow Singaporeans for cheering our athletes on at home in Singapore.
